The
southern hemisphere humpback whales come to Tonga (most the
island groups of Vava’u and Ha’apai) between June
and November with Aug-October being the best months. Last year
they sighted about 90 individuals here in the Vava’u Archipelago
(for those that are into whales). One of the main differences
between the So. And No. hemisphere humpies (as they call them
here) is that these gentle giants have very white undersides.
The whales come here to mate and give birth. In Hawaii, which
is were we live, the Northern Hemisphere humpbacks come to Hawaii
for the same purpose.
The
Kingdom of Tonga, or the Friendly Islands - so called by Captain
James Cook, is made up of three main island groups – Tongatapu
in the south, Ha’apai in the centre and Vava’u in
the north. The group collectively consists of 170 islands, and
only 37 of these are populated. Vava’u the northern group
has sheltered water sailing, superb diving and snorkelling and
many islands to visit. A great area to get used to the boat
before sailing south. Ha’apai about an 8 hour ocean sail
south is especially unique as usually only international cruising
yachts get a chance to roam these spectacular waters. Long white
sand beaches, great shelling, snorkelling, swimming. Both Vava’u
and Ha’apai groups are the home to humpback whales in
the season. Tongatapu, where Tonga’s international airport
is situated, is another 8 hour sail from the southernmost Ha’apai
islands.
